Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and chief scientist at DeepMind, left the company on 6 August 2026 after 27 years to co-found a new start-up called Discovery Loop.

Wired said Dean is joined by three other longtime Google researchers: Sanjay Ghemawat, with whom he built core infrastructure including MapReduce and Bigtable; Oriol Vinyals, his co-lead on the Gemini project; and Quoc Le, a co-creator of sequence-to-sequence learning.

Discovery Loop is structured as a public benefit corporation, according to Wired. The company aims to automate the research cycle of hypothesis, experiment and analysis across machine learning, science and engineering, including building AI systems that can improve themselves with little human feedback.

Google is a founding investor in Discovery Loop and will act as its cloud partner, Wired said. The two organisations plan a joint research framework covering machine learning systems infrastructure. Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures are also backing the new company.

The departure was announced the same day Google restructured leadership at DeepMind, according to [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/google-deepmind-shakeup-hassabis-jeff-dean-vinyals-discovery-loop). Demis Hassabis stepped back from running Google DeepMind, and Koray Kavukcuoglu took over the Gemini project.

Dean was reportedly the source of Google's "Frozen" concept, which proposed building chips with Gemini's architecture embedded directly in silicon, according to [Wired](https://wired.com/story/jeff-dean-google-discovery-loop-startup).

Wired said automated AI research has become a new area of competition, with OpenAI, Anthropic and other start-ups pursuing systems designed to accelerate scientific work. Discovery Loop's product and timeline have not been detailed.
