The answer

Nvidia's board increased its share buyback authorisation by $150 billion to $235 billion total

Nvidia's board approved an additional $150 billion under its existing share repurchase programme on Monday 28 September 2026, taking the company's total remaining authorisation to $235 billion, according to Nvidia's announcement. Nvidia said this is the largest share repurchase authorisation increase in history.

Nvidia said it expects to execute the full $235 billion programme through fiscal year 2028.

The Motley Fool estimates that figure equals about 4.3% of Nvidia's market value. It amounts to more than $39 billion in buybacks a quarter. That covers six quarters to the end of fiscal 2028, according to CNBC.

Founder and chief executive Jensen Huang linked the increase to the company's growth. "NVIDIA's growth is being driven by a once-in-a-generation platform shift to AI and accelerated computing," he said.

Huang said Nvidia's cash generation gives it the capacity to invest in the technologies that advance this transformation. He said it also lets Nvidia return capital to shareholders. Huang said the authorisation reflects confidence in the long-term opportunity.

Nvidia shares traded about 3% higher after the announcement. The move followed a 3.7% fall in Nvidia shares tied to broader caution over AI spending. Nvidia shares are up about 20% this year, and the company is the world's most valuable.

Nvidia repurchased 282 million shares for $40.4 billion in fiscal 2026, including nearly $20 billion in its most recent quarter. Earlier increases added $80 billion in May 2026, $60 billion in August 2025 and $50 billion in August 2024.

In August Nvidia projected about 70% sales growth for the next fiscal year. Earlier this month Huang said Nvidia would double the number of chips it sells in 2027. Huang has worked to play down concerns about an AI bubble.
