Nvidia's Jensen Huang puts chance of AI ending world by 2030 at 0%
The Nvidia chief executive has rejected AI doom warnings from lab leaders and says existing laws already cover the harms.
The answer
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected AI doom warnings, saying there is a 0% chance AI ends the world by 2030.
Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang has become the leading industry critic of AI doom warnings, Fortune reported on 4 October, as lab leaders call for a slowdown in frontier AI development.
Fortune said Huang has emerged as the biggest foil to AI doomerism. In a CBS interview in September, he said there is a 0% chance AI ends the world by 2030, and he called doomsday predictions "irresponsible".
Huang suggested some lab leaders may have "ulterior reasons" to exaggerate the risk. He said: "They're actually not asking for more laws. They're asking to be relieved of the laws we do have."
At a G20 event in September, Huang said governments should regulate "actual and pragmatic harm" rather than "hypothetical, theoretical harm". In July, he told Axios that AI ending humanity was "complete nonsense".
Huang rejects new AI regulation. He says existing product-liability and unauthorised-entry laws already cover the harms. He has acknowledged that AI could have "terrible applications" and must be developed safely. Fortune reported his line as: "we should go as fast as we can, but not faster than we should."
He was responding to warnings such as those from former Anthropic researchers, who put the risk of AI destroying humanity within a decade above 10%.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has published an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier", which OpenAI's Sam Altman has backed. At the All-In Summit on 14 September, President Donald Trump phoned Huang on stage and called the fears a hoax. Nvidia sells the chips behind every frontier lab.
The notes give no date for any further statements or policy decisions. Fortune's earlier report of 21 September covered Huang's comments on AI leaders and doomsday narratives.
