The answer

OpenAI launched always-on "Dots" agents and a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model on 29 September.

OpenAI held its annual DevDay developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, unveiling Dots, a line of always-on AI agents, alongside more than 20 other products and features. Sam Altman gave the keynote address.

OpenAI said each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, gets its own cloud computer and browser, and works toward user-set goals around the clock. The launch is OpenAI's answer to Meta's Muse, launched 8 September, and SpaceXAI's Grok Bot, in beta since 11 August.

Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins and can be reached via ChatGPT's desktop and mobile apps, its website, Slack, Microsoft Teams and voice calls, according to OpenAI. Users can set custom rules requiring approval for, or blocking, specific actions, and password changes always need human sign-off.

The first dot is included at no extra cost for ChatGPT Pro, at $200 a month, and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, with additional dots available for purchase. "Your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost," OpenAI said. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare versions are in beta pending admin approval.

OpenAI also released GPT-6.1 Sol, a week after GPT-6 Sol, which it described as a "major upgrade" that nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional tasks at one-fifth of Astra's token prices. The model costs $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens and $10 per million output tokens in the API, and is live in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users.

Third-party testing firm Artificial Analysis scored GPT-6.1 Sol 52 on its Intelligence Index, against 58 for Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, at roughly $0.72 per task compared with $5.98 for Opus 5.5.

OpenAI introduced a new $500-a-month Pro 500 plan offering 25 times the Plus usage allowance with its Ultrafast speed tier included. Ultrafast runs up to eight times faster in Codex and up to six times faster in the API, at up to six times the standard price, and is live now for GPT-6 Astra with a Sol version to follow. The company also cut Pro plan usage from 20x to 10x Plus for new $200 subscribers, though existing subscribers keep 20x for an unspecified period; the $100 tier remains at 5x usage.

Other announcements included ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace for teams and their dots; Pages, a collaborative document and slide tool; plugin extensions allowing full developer-built apps inside ChatGPT and Codex; Sign in with ChatGPT, with 16 launch partners including Notion, Vercel and Cognition's Devin; OpenAI Private Intelligence, offering zero data retention; and an Agents API with computer use, according to BGR and Decrypt.

The announcements came a day after OpenAI cancelled the planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra, saying the model did not meet its safety standards.
