Sweden's Government Offices block ChatGPT and Claude on work computers

Staff at the prime minister's office and the ministries lose access from Monday 26 October, while Microsoft Copilot stays approved.

The answer

Sweden's Government Offices will block ChatGPT and Claude on staff work computers from 26 October.

Sweden's Government Offices (Regeringskansliet) will block staff access to ChatGPT and Claude on work computers from Monday 26 October, according to Sveriges Radio's Ekot, which cited internal information.

The measure covers the prime minister's office and the ministries. The stated reason is information security.

Sveriges Radio said in its report of 23 October that Microsoft Copilot remains allowed. The Government Offices ran a security review of Copilot and took further protective measures. The press office would not say what they were, citing security.

Digitalisation director Mikael Wettercrantz reportedly warned on the intranet that using AI services without a contract could have consequences for information security. That is a paraphrase and not a verified quote.

The block does not stop all generative AI use. Some staff reportedly get access through an internal AI platform.

The Government Offices had already restricted DeepSeek. The Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care have also introduced blocks, according to the reports. SVT also reported the block on 23 October.

One outlet has said Claude may return via Copilot. Other sources do not confirm this. The full Sveriges Radio report is available on its website.

The block takes effect on Monday 26 October.
