Microsoft books $10 billion in revenue from OpenAI
Microsoft's quarterly filing shows its commercial arrangements with OpenAI generated $10 billion in the quarter ended 30 September 2026.
The answer
Microsoft reported $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI in its latest quarter.
Microsoft said its regulatory filing shows $10 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments. The figure covers the quarter ended 30 September 2026, Microsoft's first quarter of fiscal 2027. That is about 11% of Microsoft's total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion, according to the filing reported by TechCrunch.
The filing shows $7.2 billion owed by OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June. TechCrunch said this amount relates to past transactions, not new revenue.
OpenAI-related revenue totalled $24.1 billion for the full fiscal 2026 year. The latest quarterly pace implies roughly $40 billion annualised, TechCrunch reported.
The filing does not split the $10 billion between revenue sharing and Azure cloud services. TechCrunch said it had asked for more information. Neither company has confirmed OpenAI's reported 20% revenue share to Microsoft.
An April 2026 agreement has OpenAI sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap. OpenAI can work with competing cloud providers. In October 2025, Microsoft gave up its exclusive hold on OpenAI, and OpenAI committed to buying an additional $250 billion in Azure services.
Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI fell from about 25% in June to 24% in September. Microsoft did not say what caused the dilution. The two companies increasingly compete for the same customers, even as their financial ties remain large, TechCrunch reported, citing "the enormous financial ties that remain between the two companies."
Microsoft has not said what it will report next on OpenAI. The next quarterly filing will show whether the revenue and payment figures change.
