The answer

US government launched an AI chatbot site, America.gov, on 29 September 2026.

The Trump administration launched America.gov on Tuesday 29 September 2026, an AI-powered portal designed to be a single entry point to federal services. Google said it is a technology partner on the project, alongside xAI.

The site's homepage reads: "Whatever you need from the government, start here." Users type in requests, such as booking a national-park campsite, getting a child's passport or replacing a Social Security card, and the system directs them to the right service.

US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, the Airbnb co-founder now working in the administration, said the tool draws on about 29,000 government websites and answers only from official sources. "One official source of truth: The United States Government," Gebbia said.

Google said its Gemini model is "leveraging Gemini to help more than 100 million people access critical public resources with greater speed and ease". A White House spokesperson confirmed xAI's Grok as the other underlying model.

Trump created the site by executive order, describing it as a "unified digital front door to the Federal Government for every individual in the US seeking Federal information or services". The order instructs agencies to connect their public-facing services "as soon as possible", with integration of Login.gov coordinated through the General Services Administration, the National Design Studio and the Office of Management and Budget.

Trump named future uses including passport applications, changing a name after marriage, reserving campsites, choosing Medicare plans and helping veterans access benefits. For now the site only offers guidance pointing users toward the correct service; the administration said users will be able to complete processes and track their progress within the site from 2027.

The launch took place at a day-long event at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr Mehmet Oz.

America.gov joins other federal AI initiatives including the General Services Administration's OneGov and USAi programmes. CNBC noted that Gebbia also sits on Tesla's board, and that Tesla, which owns part of SpaceXAI, uses Grok in its vehicles. The Register described the new site as "unfinished, poorly designed". Agencies are expected to continue connecting their services to the portal in the coming months, ahead of the 2027 rollout of full transaction features.
