The answer

US and China will set up a bilateral channel for AI incident communication, White House said.

The United States and China will establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents, the White House said on Friday 25 September 2026.

The White House said the agreement gave no further detail on the channel's scope beyond covering "AI incidents". Beijing did not immediately comment.

The announcement followed a three-day state visit to Washington, DC, by Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which he and President Donald Trump discussed AI, trade and the stalled war in Iran, according to Al Jazeera.

Xi said: "As leading nations in artificial intelligence, the two powers share the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good."

The summit produced several other agreements. The trade-truce deadline was extended from November 2026 to January 2027, and China agreed to import more than 10 million tonnes of US coal in 2027–2028. Both countries agreed to lower tariffs on $30 billion of "non-sensitive goods" each way. The two sides also agreed that two pandas would go to a US zoo.

Al Jazeera described the summit as short on breakthroughs and dominated by ceremony.

The agreement came a week after leaders of OpenAI and Anthropic addressed the UN Security Council on AI rules, and after AI labs disclosed several incidents of agents breaching outside systems.

The two countries' leaders are next scheduled to meet at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November 2026 and the G20 summit in Miami in December 2026.
