OpenAI releases GPT-6.1 Terra with 50% lower token prices
OpenAI said the mid-tier model completes tasks more than three times as quickly as GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The answer
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a mid-tier model it says is faster and cheaper.
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October, an upgrade to its mid-tier model that it says is faster and costs half as much per token. The company said Terra completes tasks more than three times as quickly as GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The model is available now in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API as gpt-6.1-terra. The API price is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. According to BleepingComputer, OpenAI said the price is 50% lower than both GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. 9to5Mac gave the 50% comparison against GPT-5.6 Terra only.
On Agents' Last Exam, Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort, at about one-third the cost. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Terra scored 50.3% at maximum reasoning effort, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding tasks.
At low reasoning effort, the error rate on OpenAI's internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%, according to 9to5Mac. At maximum effort, it fell by 18 points to 4.3%. The figures come from OpenAI's internal benchmark, not an independent test. Artificial Analysis separately reported a large drop in hallucination rate on its own benchmark.
OpenAI said in its announcement that Terra "even performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at only one-tenth its price per token".
Terra was upgraded from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6.1. It was left out when GPT-6 Sol and Luna launched the previous month, 9to5Mac said. OpenAI's lineup has four tiers, from lowest to highest capability: Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra.
In ChatGPT, the model is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users.
